In John D father’s will he was left joint ownership of 9 North Parade with his half sibling David Morgan. The reality was that neither took over the shop. David became minister of Belmont and John David emigrated and set up a butchery business in NZ.
Jack emigrated to NZ and in the 1925 electoral roll he is listed as being a butcher in Malcolm Street, Martinborough, Waiarapa, NZ. NEWSPAPER ARTICLES
• John D Rowlands and David Jones both of North Parade were charged with riding their bikes in July 1907 without lights at 10.30pm. The policeman called for them to stop but they refused. John David claimed he had not heard the policeman – Both were fined 5s (25p) each. His brother James was also caught cycling without lights in a separate incident.
• March 1901. Reported in the paper that ‘Johnnie’ left Aberystwyth with two other volunteers to go to South Africa for active service. With Private Johnny Rowlands were Arthur Dowden, Llanbadarn – both enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry. Edward Wynne (medical corps) also went.
• June 1902 Home from the Front. He landed in Southampton from SS Ulstermore. He had volunteered in April 1901 and joined the 88th Montgomeryshire Company under Lord Methuen and later with Col. Van Dunnop in the Western Districts. He had a quiet homecoming as his father had died whilst serving. His family had asked for a quiet homecoming.
• Nov 1879. John David’s birth was announced “On the 3rd Inst .. the wife of Mr William Rowlands butcher North Parade of a son”.

• The families have met over the years. John and Gwen Rowlands visited the family in NZ in1985. Megan visited family whilst studying at the RCM in London. Megan appears in a photograph in DM Rowlands’ photograph album taken in Rhyl. Robyn, whilst working for the NZ embassy in Russia visited Wales and met the family in London and Ascot. Robyn and her husband also visited Aberystwyth in the 80’s.
• In his will, John D left his farm to his son John Glyn. His hillside property and £3,000 to his son David Gwilym Rowlands. He left the residue to his wife.
